The Margate Business Association announced the award of two $2,500 scholarships to students who recently graduated recently from Ocean City High School. The 2024 winners of the Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship are Brian Garrabrant and Konstantinos Kounis, who were selected from nine scholarship entries.
This year’s competition challenged students to write an essay outlining an idea for a new required high school course, different from any course presently being taught. Responses to the prompt were all exceptional, and community judges were impressed with each of the unique entries. In addition to the writing prompt, students were required to include written references from three adults, a list of school and community activities, special honors or awards, and proposed college plans for the fall of 2024.
Brian Garrabrant’s new course proposal was entitled, “Community Engagement: Empowering Young Leaders.” Garrabrant will be attending Georgetown University majoring in economics/pre-law.
Kounis’ new course idea focused on nurturing emotional intelligence and promoting mental well-being. He will attend the University of South Florida where he will major in finance.
Since its inception, the scholarship program has awarded $130,700 to Margate residents pursuing higher education.
