About the DRCF and Dean Randazzo:
The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation was established Sept. 5, 2001 after Dean Randazzo, New Jersey’s most successful professional surfer, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (he has been battling the disease ever since). His life was profoundly changed by the diagnosis and since then, he has faced many obstacles in undergoing his treatment. He is certainly not alone.
It was through Dean’s diagnosis and steadfast determination not to let cancer beat him, that the Foundation was created. Upon learning of his diagnosis, during the height of his professional surfing career, Dean struggled with whether to tell sponsors about his diagnosis. For professional athletes such as Dean, earning their income is based upon their health and success. After telling his family, and having a conversation with his brother Joe, Dean decided to turn his misfortune into something good. Therefore, with the help of Dean’s friends and family, he started the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation to promote and encourage awareness about the risks of cancer and to provide assistance to victims of cancer battling the disease.
As a professional surfer, it made sense for Dean to host a surf contest that would bring awareness to the surfing community about the risks of cancer and how to deal with the diagnosis, head-on. The inaugural Surf for a Cause was held Sept. 15, 2001 in Margate, NJ and raised more than $20,000. Mary Lou Randazzo, Dean’s mother, held the first after party in her backyard.
Throughout the years, the board of trustees grew and focused on strengthening its mission. Events were created to further that mission in the community. The Paddle for a Cause that takes paddleboarders on a 22.5-mile course around Absecon Island; the Freeze for a Cause is the annual coldwater surfing competition and a Golf for a Cause. Some events, such as the West Coast Drink for a Cause were eliminated.
Since its inception, the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation has donated more than $500,000 to individuals battling cancer and their families. The foundation also provides grants to local organizations including the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer Fund, Shore Medical Center Cancer Center, Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Jersey, Cape Regional Cancer Center and AtlantiCare Cancer Center.
The mission is to promote and encourage awareness about the risks of cancer and to provide assistance to victims of cancer battling the disease.
As a New Jersey Non-Profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, all donations are tax deductible. More than 90% of funds raised go directly to the purposes for which the foundation was formed. The board of directors are 100% volunteer – there are NO paid DRCF Board Members or employees.
12 years later, Dean has been cancer-free. Find the foundation on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/TheDRCF/
